Muinastulede öö, or the Night of Ancient Bonfires, is an annual tradition in Estonia where bonfires are lit along the coast to commemorate the historic beacon fires known as “iilastuled.” Originating from the time of the Vikings, these fires once guided late-arriving sailors and communicated messages between coastal communities. Today, the event has become a nationwide celebration of unity and positivity, with bonfires creating a chain of light along the coast, evoking a sense of togetherness and honouring the sea that connects us. Everyone is invited to participate by lighting their own bonfire or joining an organised event, contributing to this beautiful summer tradition.
