Jazz Legend Gregory Porter in Concert

One of the top jazz and soul musicians in the world, Gregory Porter, will give a concert in the famous ruins of the Pirita Convent in Tallinn on the eve of the Song and Dance Festival. The American Grammy winner is known for winning awards for “Best Jazz Vocal Album”, and headlining several of the world’s largest venues and festivals, including Glastonbury Festival, and London Jazz Festival, to name but a few.

Porter’s soft voice is perfect for gospel and blues as well, the ideal acoustic accompaniment to the medieval surroundings of the Pirita Convent. He will be supported by his equally acclaimed ensemble, consisting of Chip Crawford on the piano, Aaron James on the bass, Emanuel Harrold on drums, and Yasuke Sato on saxophone.

The Pirita Convent itself dates back to approximately the year 1400, and was the largest Catholic monastery in old Livonia. It was a home both for monks and nuns alike. Mostly destroyed in 1577, its ruins have been abandoned since then, yet generally well preserved. Officially known today as St Bridget’s Convent, or even the Birgitta Convent Ruins, the venue is available for tours here.

The concert will be standing room only, without seating. This is perfect however, as the audience will be free to wander around and marvel at the ancient architecture of the ruins as Porter’s beautiful jazz and soul music adorns the remains of the walls and structures. This is the ideal way to warm up the night before the Song and Dance Celebration begins the next day. Tickets are available here.
