Georgian National Ballet to Perform in Tallinn

One of the most celebrated dance ensembles in the world is performing in Tallinn’s Alexela Concert Hall on 17 February. Sukhishvili, the Georgian National Ballet, is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a world tour, including this performance in Tallinn. Audiences can expect an unforgettable programme featuring the most iconic songs and dances from the company’s rich and extensive history.

Founded in 1945 by Iliko and Nino Sukhishvili, the company is widely acknowledged as the first professional Georgian folk ballet ensemble. Over the course of eight decades, Sukhishvili has captivated millions of spectators on the most prestigious stages around the world, from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, to La Scala in Milan. International media have praised the troupe, with the New York Times even referring to them as “the eighth wonder of the world”.

The 80th anniversary programme features a stunning array of virtuoso performances. The men’s dances, full of acrobatics, leaps, synchronised turns and spins, create breathtaking displays of strength and precision. Meanwhile, the women’s dances captivate audiences with grace, elegance, and refined technique. At the heart of the ensemble’s identity is the unique Georgian male toe dance, which is a trademark movement of Sukhishvili and is unmatched by other troupes.

The visual artistry and live orchestra only serve to strengthen the impact of the performance on audiences. Sukhishvili is truly an ambassador of Georgian history and cultural heritage. Today’s troupe is in fact led by the third generation of the same family, the grandchildren of the founders.

The performance will begin at 19:00 and last for just over two hours, with a 30-minute intermission. Doors open at 18:00, and tickets are available here.
