Pärnu’s Hanseatic Days festival takes place from 3–5 July, and celebrates the city’s rich medieval history, as well as membership in the Hanseatic League. This massive event near the riverside provides visitors with a portal back in time to experience life from the Medieval period to the late Renaissance. Food, culture, clothing, markets, music, chivalry, everything that is characterised by this era of European history will be present, just hopefully not the smells of the time.
The Hanseatic League was a powerful market and defensive network of trade guilds and cities from the 13th to 17th centuries, operating primarily in Northern and Central Europe. Today’s Pärnu Hanseatic Days is a festival built around buying, selling, learning, and teaching everything associated with the “old ways”. The overall theme is the Middle Ages, and that is exactly the kind of music you will hear throughout the festival’s three days.
For those more interested in chivalry, or the medieval code of honour, there will be a Tournament of Knights, with re-enactments simulating medieval combat: primarily swordfighting in full armour. Enthusiasts will also be able to try their hand at ax-throwing, archery, and more. Children will also be able to enjoy the Knights Village, where they can battle it out with soft swords.
There are two main stages in the festival area where concerts and performances will be held throughout the days and evenings of the festival. Performers are from Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, and of course Estonia, with some concerts spilling out of the festival area into Pärnu’s Old Town.
