Exciting events in Estonia this week

18 Oct 2024–4 May 2025 Sooster 100: View from Private Collections, Tallinn

The Sooster 100: View from Private Collections exhibition, which presents the works of Ülo Sooster (1924–1970) in honour of his 100th birthday, is in the Mikkeli Museum in Tallinn. Sooster was a prominent representative of post-war modernism and surrealism, whose work extended from early Hiiumaa paintings to unfinished compositions in the last years of his life. Sooster’s life and artistic direction were interrupted by seven years in a prison camp in Kazakhstan, after which he only briefly returned to Estonia.

25 Oct 2024–16 Mar 2025 Kaja Kärner: Friendship and Time, Tallinn

The Kaja Kärner: Friendship and Time exhibition will be open for the next two weeks at the Adamson-Eric Museum in Tallinn. Artist Kaja Kärner’s works deal a lot with Tartu’s urban environment, and people. She has also painted many works of her famous group of friends, some of which are now on display in the art museum. Kärner’s paintings vividly capture the uniqueness of a moment, and they often contain subtle irony, not to mention multiple levels of interpretation.

1 Nov 2024–31 Dec 2025 Invisible City Exhibition, Tartu

The Invisible City: 800 Years of the City of Tartu exhibition delves into Tartu’s medieval past, presenting the city’s origins as well as the lives of its early inhabitants. The University of Tartu Museum’s exhibition features models of the city, including the first ever virtual reconstruction of 13th century Tartu. The exhibition offers perspectives on the city’s natural history and urban development. Visitors will also be able to see archaeological finds, and an exact copy of the oldest surviving city model, from 1686.

2 Feb–17 Apr Estonian National Opera Chamber Concerts, Tallinn

The Estonian National Opera’s chamber concerts offer an intimate musical experience, featuring works both by international and Estonian composers. The chamber concert series begins with a sold-out performance on 22 February, featuring Estonian music. Other concerts will feature romantic French pieces by Fauré on 20 March, as well as works by Debussy, Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn and many other renowned European composers. There will be a third concert in the series on 17 April.

28 Feb–9 Mar Orchid Exhibition, Tartu and Tallinn

The orchid exhibitions of the Tallinn and Tartu Botanical Gardens are held at the same time. Tartu will display rare orchid species from Ecuador, several of which should bloom during the exhibition. Tallinn will display over 500 varieties. Orchids can be purchased from both events on site. More information on the Tartu event is available here in Estonian.

4–8 Mar TUJA 2025 Jazz Festival, Pärnu, Tallinn, Tartu

The five-day TUJA 2025 Jazz Festival, an event featuring jazz by students, is the oldest jazz festival in Estonia. This year’s festival will be the 43rd since the first Tudengijazz festival was held illegally in 1982, when performers defied the Soviet authorities, who had banned the public performance of jazz. The event has seen many talented European and Estonian musicians. This year, the opening concert will be held at Philly Joe’s jazz club in Tartu. The programme in Estonian is available here.

5 Mar–4 Apr Pärnu FotoFest 2025, Pärnu

FotoFest 2025 features works by photographers from Pärnu and its surroundings. The exhibition, which is being held for the 8th time, is called Organics I Mechanics, which refers to a world characterised by increasingly acute environmental problems, and where natural and zero-waste art have become increasingly important.

8 Mar Põhjala Factory Spring Market, Tallinn

The Põhjala factory in Kopli was a rubber factory for decades. You could say this helped the whole complex to bounce back today as a home to creative businesses, design shops, galleries, a theatre, cafés, and restaurants. On Saturday, 8 March, the traditional spring market will be held, where local artists, designers and craftsmen sell their various goods and crafts. Music, entertainment, and food trucks will also be there.

8 Mar Love Run 2025, Tallinn

Sometimes you just have to run for love. This time you can do it with friends while celebrating Women’s Day in a sporty way. The basic distance is five kilometers, but more passionate runners can also run the half marathon and marathon, at 21 and 42 kilometers, respectively. Instructions for participation can be found on the event’s Facebook page.

8 Mar Puuluup concert, Pärnu

In the evening of Women’s Day, the popular folk band Puuluup will be coming to entertain the people of Pärnu. The band’s music is not exactly traditional folk music, but more like very original contemporary folk. Puuluup represented Estonia with 5MIINUST in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. Their concerts are often sold out, so it’s worth getting your tickets early.
