Tuglas Society Recommends Estonian Culture in Finland

Three events will be held this summer in Finland celebrating Estonian culture. The first is:

Finnish–Estonian Midsummer Celebration

This annual event will take place a little before the actual St John’s Day, on Saturday, 14 June, at 17:00 in Aurlahti, Rantapuisto 8, in Lohja. Estonian artists such as Anne Veski, Terminaator, Shanon, and Hunt will perform at the traditional Midsummer celebration of the Estonian diaspora in Finland. Estonian food will be served.

Mephisto

15–16 August, National Theatre, Itäinen Teatterikuja 2, Helsinki

The Helsinki Festival brings to the National Theatre’s large stage the Estonian Drama Theatre’s dazzling and visually spectacular interpretation of Klaus Mann‘s novel, “Mephisto”. Mann’s still-relevant text explores the intersection of power, morality, politics, and art with an intense approach. In addition to a stellar cast, the stage will feature, among others, the Estonian National Opera’s Estonian Boys’ Choir, Juhanid.

Fundamentalist

20–21 August, Stoa Cultural Centre, Turunlinnantie 1, Helsinki

A story of love, power, and faith in the Helsinki Festival programme. Juha Jokela‘s “Fundamentalist” premiered in 2006 at the Jurka Theatre. The Von Krahl Theatre has performed “Fundamentalist” to sold-out audiences in Tallinn since 2021—with over 100 performances, the work has made history. The performance will be in Estonian, with subtitles and audio interpretation in Finnish.
