Ukrainian artists bring abstract art to Tartu

The exhibition Abstract Reality will be held at Jakobi Galerii in Tartu from February 5 to March 7. This exhibition addresses how rapidly changing and unpredictable processes affect the way we perceive reality, making it increasingly difficult to grasp. The works presented focus on the tension between abstraction and the human need to find stability in a constantly shifting environment.

Curated by Viktoria Berezina, Abstract Reality features artworks by Kostiantyn Tereshcheko, Serhii Serko, and Mariia Zahurska. The artists, originally from Kherson, Ukraine, and now based in Sweden, use various media, including graphics, painting, and ceramics, to explore themes of abstraction, stability, and the human connection to recognizable forms. The exhibition presents how familiar symbols like a house, a child, or the sun can help anchor us in times of uncertainty.

Each artist brings their own distinct approach to these themes. Tereshcheko’s work blends visionary art and magical realism, while Serko’s mixed-media pieces reflect the complexity of existence. Zahurska’s symbolic ceramics and monotypes express personal discoveries in a world increasingly dominated by abstraction.

Admission to the exhibition is free. More information is available on Tartu’s official webpage.
