The Superorganism exhibition explores the balance between individual and collective existence

Superorganism is an event that encompasses an exhibition, symposium and storybook that is set to open tomorrow (October 18), at Aparaaditehas, in Tartu. This international event, curated by a team of curators from 17 European cultural organisations, explores the intricate dynamics between individual and collective existence through the lens of the “superorganism” concept. Originally derived from biology, the term describes social insect colonies functioning as one entity, but the exhibition expands its meaning to explore its relevance in society and ecosystems today.

With contributions from 25 artists from across Europe, Superorganism invites visitors to delve into artworks spanning photography, installations, performances, and video. The pieces are a result of “Magic Carpets” residencies, undertaken between 2021 and 2024, with 150 projects contributing to the overall event. Participating artists include talents such as Laura Adel from Poland, Gary Markle from Canada/Estonia, and Berta Tilmantaitė from Lithuania, each interpreting the delicate balance between unity and individuality through their own unique mediums.

The immersive nature of the exhibition extends beyond static displays, transforming various spaces within Aparaaditehas into a living metaphor of the superorganism. From the Kogo Gallery to public areas like the Red Wall Gallery and the Sofa Office, the entire space becomes a reflective journey, inviting dialogue on sustainability, human rights, and collective responsibility.

Alongside the exhibition, Superorganism features a “Symposium in Three Acts,” happening on October 19. This interdisciplinary event delves into the social and ecological implications of superorganism concepts, offering interactive workshops, performances, and philosophical discussions with artists and thinkers such as Carmen Brucic and Yuriy Kruchak.

Additionally, the Superorganism Storybook documents the artistic journey, providing readers with insights into the works and the themes explored during the residencies. The book reflects on the power of art to inspire, connect, and engage in collective action to shape the future.

You can get more information about the event from the official Superorganism website.
