Discover Creative Narva at NART

Text and photos Susanna Poikela

Discover Creative Narva at NARTThe Art Residency house was completed in 1893 as a private residence for the family of the Kreenholm factory manager.

Narva Art Residency (NART) is a vibrant international artist residency situated on the historic former Kreenholm factory site in Narva. Located along the banks of the Narva River and near the Russian border, NART occupies a striking red brick building dating back to 1893, which was once the home of the Kreenholm factory manager’s family.

The backyard of NART is home to a community garden for residents of the Kreenholm area.

Founded in 2015, NART has quickly established itself as a key centre for art and culture. It provides local and international artists with a stimulating environment to work on their projects, free from everyday distractions. The residency features gallery space, both shared and private workspaces, and accommodation for artists-in-residence.

NART has interesting exhibitions by resident artists both together and individually.
“Compost of Joy” is a joint exhibition by Aasa Ruukeli, Karolina Peterson, Marc Sauvageot, Pavel Dodatko and Valerija Oja.
Multimedia exhibition CRTL + ALT + REPEAT by Jordan Vinyard.

NART is a space where art intersects with the local community

It actively supports projects that foster dialogue between Narva’s residents and visiting artists. The residency frequently hosts events, exhibitions, and workshops that are open to the public, enriching the cultural life of Narva and offering locals the chance to engage with diverse art forms and cultures.

The Art Residency regularly organises training, courses and events.

The doors of the Artists’ Residence are open to those interested in art exhibitions, the history of the building, or NART’s various events. Although Narva is predominantly Russian-speaking, Estonian and English are fluently spoken on-site, ensuring that language is not a barrier. The exhibitions and events are designed to be both interesting and accessible to all.
