The popular annual Tallinn Day will be celebrated this year on two days this week – Wednesday May 15 and Saturday May 18. The event serves to commemorate the historical significance of May 15, 1248, when Tallinn was granted Lübeck’s City Law, allowing it to join the Hanseatic League and become a key player in European trade. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for Tallinn’s growth and prosperity as a city.
Beyond celebrating its historical roots, Tallinn Day is also about fostering community spirit and pride among its residents. It’s a day to celebrate the city’s journey and showcase the life of its residents.
As usual, there will be a full programme of events happening around the city. The opening ceremony will take place this Wednesday at 12 noon in Old Town square, followed by a concert by the Celloboys on the balcony of the Tallinn City Council. Admission to Tallinn City Museums will also be just 1 euro on the day.
On Saturday, several events will happen in different districts of the city, including Nõmme, Haabersti, the city centre and Mustamäe. You will also have the chance to take part in the biggest recycling festival UK Fest, which will take place in Telliskivi starting at 10 am.
You can check out the full Tallinn Day programme on the event’s official website here.
