Tartu’s year as the European Capital of Culture officially begins tomorrow

Tartu’s year as the European Capital of Culture is set to officially kick off with a vibrant and fun opening ceremony tomorrow evening, January 26. As well as a free concert on the banks of the Emajõgi river, there will also be a procession and rave.

The celebration will begin at 7 pm with an hour-long performance titled “All Becomes One!” that promises to showcase the city’s spirit. Renowned Estonian artists, including Trad.Attack!, Sander Mölder, and Lonitseera, will grace the stage. The event can be watched on the banks of the Emajõgi river.

The celebration will continue at 8 pm with a procession led by a travelling hedgehog and a mutant car, that will culminate in a free open-air rave at the Estonian National Museum (ERM), featuring international acts such as SIGMA (UK) and Emily Makis & Hi-Phi (UK).

Public transport in the city will also be free of charge for all on January 26. For those unable to attend in person, the evening’s festivities will be broadcast live on ETV.

All of the events mentioned above are free of charge to attend. More information about the opening ceremony and the full programme of Tartu’s year as the European Capital of Culture can be found on the official website here
