Vanemuine Theatre season opens tomorrow with a festival in Tartu city centre

Vanemuine Theatre opens for its 153rd season this Saturday, August 27, inviting everyone to the heart of Tartu to enjoy various concerts and performances, take part in a theatre quiz, get to know behind the scenes of the theatre, and make crafts.

“Similarly to past years, this year we will also give a boost to the fresh season of the Vanemuine Theatre, this time already in its 153rd season, and we will come closer to our audience with the whole theatre family — to the city centre park, the town hall square and some unexpected places. We will show the behind-the-scenes of the theatre, share useful advice and delight spectators with performances that are not part of the theatre’s daily repertoire. I really hope to meet a lot of theatre friends that day,” said Kristiina Alliksaar, Vanemuine Theatre director.

On Saturday, Vanemuine musicians from the symphony orchestra and the opera choir will surprise people in Tartu with various musical performances in Tartu Market Hall, Kaubamaja, the Railway Station, Truffe Cafe, Kvartal and Shakespeare Café.

There will be fun activities for the whole family in the Central Park festival area. For example, you can dance together with Vanemuine ballet dancers, hear poetry on the banks of the Emajõgi river, enjoy an opera choir concert, get a behind-the-scenes look at the opera and take part in a theatre quiz led by drama actor Karol Kuntsel, where musical interludes will also be played.

There will also be a children’s area in Central Park where all those who are interested can play with the Yellow Cats and make their own Sipsik. The make-up department will move its desks to the park, and will present how the children’s musical “Sipsik” comes to the stage. There will also be props, which will reveal some theatre secrets.

In Town Hall Square, several concerts will be performed on the festival stage. the gala concert of the Vanemuine Dance and Balletschool, the concert of the Vanemuine Opera Choir, the gala concert of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra and soloists, and the joint concert of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra and the Tartu Ensemble Lonitseera will end the festival.

Entrance to the festival is free of charge.
