Number of unemployed women on the rise

According to data released by Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2023, the number of unemployed people was 8500 more than in the same period last year. However, while the number of unemployed men decreased, the number of unemployed women increased.

“In the second quarter, there were 50,200 unemployed persons, which is 8,500 more than in the same quarter last year and 11,100 more than in the first quarter this year, said Tea Vassiljeva, an analyst at Statistics Estonia.

Vassiljeva added that the biggest change has taken place in female unemployment. There were 23,500 unemployed men in the second quarter,–200 fewer than in the second quarter last year. “However, the number of unemployed women totalled 26,700, which is 8,700 more than last year,” she said.

Compared with the first quarter of 2023, the rise in unemployment was also more marked among women. ”The number of unemployed women rose by 8,000 and the number of unemployed men by 3,100”. The unemployment rate was 6.3 per cent for men and 7.1 per cent for women.
