Christmas in Different Eras at the Estonian Open Air Museum

Estonia’s Open Air Museum in Tallinn has created a Christmas village throughout its grounds, and invites visitors to come experience how this popular holiday has been celebrated throughout the ages, and across the various regions of Estonia. Children are especially welcome to visit Santa himself, and view the Christmas tree and other beautiful decorations.

Depending on the weather, meaning if it’s snowy or muddy, you can experience what real life was like in centuries past as you explore the territory of Estonia’s largest outdoor museum via kick-sled or in rubber boots, respectively. Keep an eye out for Santa and the “Christmas goat” wandering around. One of them will eagerly listen to any songs, poetry, or wish lists you might have. The other will hopefully scream, because it’s just funny.

Visit Suutlepa Chapel where carol singers will fill the air with warm melodies. In front of Kolu Tavern, there will be a Christmas market, where local vendors will sell warm drinks and holiday foods, filling the air with warm aromas.

The various other exhibits throughout the Open Air Museum will house workshops, lectures, and various other holiday-related items, such as gingerbread cookies. There is also a special exhibit about how the “written word” has helped shape this holiday. And not just the Bible, but children’s books, and more, even journalism. The only way to find out is to visit!

More information and the complete schedule are available in English here.
