Top chef makes burgers in Muhu

Top chef makes burgers in Muhu German chef Stefan Berwanger and his family live year-round on the island of Muhu.

German Stefan Berwanger used to work as a chef at Aleksander Restaurant at the Pädaste Manor on the island of Muhu. His wife was also the restaurant manager. But running a busy high-end restaurant was demanding. There were times when the couple hardly saw each other, even though they both worked in the same restaurant. There was little time together.

When the Berwangers began to expect a new addition to their family, they made a big decision. They both quit their jobs at the Aleksander Restaurant, but stayed in Muhu permanently, and started their own street food restaurant called Island Burger. “When my wife got pregnant, we decided to stay here. Now we live in Muhu all year round because it’s a good place to be,” says Stefan Berwanger. “The island is beautiful and in Muhu you don’t have to worry so much.”

Island Burger, Muhu
Island Burger is one of the most popular places in the street food area.

Island Burger is located in the restaurant hub of the village of Liiva on the island of Muhu. There are several street food outlets in there, including Muhurito, a pizzeria and burrito restaurant. There are no indoor facilities, so guests enjoy their meals on the communal terrace area. This is another reason why the area is only open during the summer, a large part of the turnover comes from tourists and holidaymakers.

The burger place is open on weekends in May and every day in June, July and August. Stefan Berwanger, who previously worked in European Michelin restaurants, runs his own catering service in winter.

The portions at Island Burger are really big. The most popular burger is the Beef Burger. Other burgers on offer include chicken, shrimp and goat’s cheese burgers. Island Burger also offers salads, French fries and refreshing drinks. The homemade fries, served with chilli sauce, onions and jalapenos, are a fiery delight. The larger portion is large enough for two diners. Many say these are the best fries in Estonia!

For those travelling to Muhu in the summer, it’s well worth driving a few kilometres from the harbour to the village of Livia to enjoy a delicious burger.
