Muhu Food Street: the Tastiest Stop on Estonia’s Large Islands

Muhu Food Street: the Tastiest Stop on Estonia’s Large IslandsJust a few kilometres from the ferry terminal on Muhu Island is this unique street food destination.

If you’re heading to Saaremaa and have just arrived at Kuivastu Harbour, don’t rush to put your foot down on the accelerator. Just a few kilometres along the main road, in the village of Liiva, you’ll find a place that is sure to make any hungry traveller’s heart beat a little faster.

Muhu Toidutänav, or Muhu Food Street, is the island’s summer food oasis, where a relaxed island atmosphere meets world-class cooking and flavours from around the globe.

The atmosphere is lively yet laid-back. True to Muhu’s character, the furniture is imaginative and full of bright colours. Around the wooden outdoor tables, Estonian hipsters enjoying a weekend away sit comfortably alongside Finnish visitors, local residents, and families with children.

Relaxed music plays in the background while the aroma of freshly baked pizza and grilled meat fills the air. Street food here is much more than fast food: the entire area is an experience worth discovering.

Muhu Toidutänav is open daily during the summer season from midday onwards. It is the perfect stop on the way to Kuressaare or a delicious highlight of a day spent exploring Muhu Island.

Stefan Berwanger is a master of gourmet burgers.

Three favourites at Muhu Food Street

Island Burger

This is the place for gourmet burgers created by a top chef. Behind the street food restaurant is Stefan Berwanger, a German-born former head chef of the luxurious Pädaste Manor. Berwanger chose to stay on Muhu and open his own street food venue.

Muhu Food Street is located in the village of Liiva.

The burgers are among the island’s best, made entirely from local ingredients. The beef comes from Muhu Liha, the buns are baked by the nearby Muhu Pagarid bakery, and the vegetables are sourced from local farms.

Alongside the juicy beef burger, the menu includes options such as a goat’s cheese burger, chicken burger and prawn burger.

Don’t miss the crispy Sloppy Joe fries. If you enjoy spicy food, the jalapeño and cheese version is highly recommended.

Muhurito

Muhurito brings the flavours of Mexico to Muhu with its own island twist. This legendary Mexican-inspired food stand serves generously filled, fresh burritos and tacos. The secret to the flavours lies in the restaurant’s own homemade sauces.

The cheerful team makes every customer feel welcome. When asked how spicy you would like your meal, don’t overestimate your tolerance. If you like spicy food, level 2 or 3 is usually more than enough. The hottest option, level 5, is genuinely fiery.

Muhurito’s burrito is also available with lamb.

Meite Napoli

For authentic Italian artisan pizza, head to Meite Napoli. The pizzeria uses a traditional high-temperature stone oven, allowing pizzas to bake in just 60–90 seconds. The result is everything you would expect from a Neapolitan-style pizza: beautifully puffed, lightly charred crusts with a crisp base.

The four-cheese pizza is especially recommended. With its high-quality melted mozzarella, it makes a perfect summer lunch enjoyed straight from the box on the terrace.
