The Estonian National Opera is showing the premiere of German director Axel Ranisch’s film “Orphea in Love” today. The Estonian soprano Mirjam Mesak shines in the main role of the film, and after the screening Neeme Raud will interview Mirjam Mesak and the director Axel Ranisch on the stage of the Estonian National Opera.
The musical film “Orphea in Love“ is the story of a young singer who works in a call center and falls in love with a thief, who is later killed in a car accident. Orphea is offered the opportunity to retrieve her loved one from the afterlife.
According to Mirjam Mesak, she is very happy that a film close to her heart will finally reach Estonian viewers. “The project started already in 2020, when I received a call from director Axel Ranisch. In the midst of a raging pandemic, we started working on the script, and to my great delight, Axel wanted my character to be an Estonian girl. This movie has a little bit of me, a little bit of Estonia, a little bit of opera, and definitely a lot of love!” Mesak describes.
The film is a tribute to opera and love, while telling its own story, combining realistic and kitschy narration. In a sense, the piece is as close to Flashdance as it is to Gluck or Puccini.
