A festive family day at Kadriorg Art Museum

This weekend is your last chance to take in the Christmas spirit. Not just with Tallinn and Tartu’s magical Christmas Markets closing this weekend, but also a Christmas-themed family day this Saturday, January 6, at the Kadriorg Art Museum. Where among other things, you and your children can try drawing with charcoal, take part in Christmas games, and learn about festive-inspired art.

The event, entitled “Three Kings’ Day in the Castle”, promises a magical atmosphere for both children and adults.

The beautifully adorned Christmas tree in the Kadriorg Palace, which is reminiscent of “The Nutcracker,” invites visitors to embark on a search game, connecting Christmas ornaments to hidden works of art in the museum. Meanwhile, children can try on historical costumes, take part in a puppet show narrating the Christmas story, and engage in tasks and riddles.

Between 12 noon and 3 pm there will be an open workshop where you can capture the essence of winter using charcoal, sanguine, and chalk. The session explores charcoal drawing techniques and delves into the depiction of interior spaces by Dutch artists.

There will also be a thematic lecture tour entitled “Christmas in Art,” by art historians Kerttu Männiste and Aleksandra Murre, which will explore the evolution of Christmas depictions in European art from the early Christian period to the 18th century. The lectures are available in both Estonian and Russian.

The palace café will also complement the festivities with special Christmas treats.

You can learn more about the event on the official Kadriorg Art Museum website (in Estonian).
