Viljandi’s Hansa Days Celebrate a Golden Age

Steeped in history, culture, and tradition dating back to medieval times, Viljandi celebrates its membership in the Hanseatic League every year. This annual festival will take place over the course of three days this coming weekend. The streets will be filled with live entertainment, food, and of course the Hansa Fair, where medieval and modern merchants alike will sell their wares.

Viljandi is a unique city in the southern part of Estonia built on a hillside and full of valleys, and it also has a beautiful waterfront on a lake. It is the ideal location to celebrate anything really, including a medieval-themed festival. The city will be filled with people wearing medieval garb, enjoying music both modern and old. Activities for children and adults will be abundant.

The Hanseatic League was a trade alliance of cities and settlements mostly around the Baltic and North Seas spanning a history of nearly 600 years. Estonians see Hanseatic membership as a defining point in their history, as they were officially included in “civilisation”, and no longer just some backwater people along the European periphery. This is why so many cities in Estonia celebrate their own Hansa Days.

Viljandi is also the centre of another of Estonia’s preeminent cultural events—Viljandi Folk—which will take place a month and a half later. For both events, visitors are invited to explore the medieval ruins in the city. The full programme for Viljandi’s Hansa Days is available here, and more information in Estonian for the Hansa Fair is available here.
