If you’re visiting Estonia in July, the Tartu Hansalaat, or Tartu Hansa Fair, is one of the country’s signature summer events. Held each year in the historic old town of Tartu, Estonia’s second-largest city, the fair transforms streets, squares, and riverside promenades into a lively marketplace celebrating local culture, food, craftsmanship, and the city’s Hanseatic heritage on 11–12 July. The Emajõgi River Festival also takes place on the first day of the Hansa Fair.
The Hansa Fair is spread throughout the downtown area of Tartu, and the River Festival naturally takes place along the banks of the Emajõgi. Visitors can stroll through Town Hall Square, Küüni Street, Vabaduse Boulevard, Kaubahoov Park, and the riverside. Each location offers a different atmosphere, making the event easy to explore on foot while discovering Tartu’s rich, historic architecture and lively public areas.
Hundreds of vendors from Estonia and neighboring countries offer handmade wares and artisan products. Local farmers and food producers sell fresh produce, honey, baked goods, smoked meats, cheeses, and seasonal specialties, while numerous food stalls serve both traditional Estonian dishes as well as international street food.

The River Festival will feature a flotilla of historic boats, such as one that was crafted in the style of the Hanseatic League, specially for river traffic. There will be fishing competitions, lots of live music, and fun activities for children everywhere.
The full programme for the Emajõgi River Festival is available here, and the itinerary for both days of the Hansa Laat is here.
