Sõru Jazz is a very popular summer jazz festival held on the island of Hiiumaa, in Western Estonia. From 18–21 June, just before Midsummer’s, the harbours of Sõru and Orjaku on Hiiumaa will host a four-day festival of concerts, cultural activities, and it will all be blended in with the gorgeous local environment.
Since 2008, Sõru Jazz has featured performances by Estonian artists as well as international guests. What makes this festival stand out from other similar festivals is how it’s integrated into the local surroundings. Harbours, churches, and various other outdoor areas have traditionally been used as venues.
Due to Hiiumaa’s size, visitors are invited to explore the island in every detail, and still have enough time to make it back for that evening’s concerts. Long seaside areas, beaches, forests, and a whole network of lighthouses await discovery, not to mention the wonderful restaurants that dot the island. Even getting to the island is an adventure, and yes, you can take your car or bicycle on the ferry.
Surprisingly, there are only two artists that refer to themselves as a “trio”, which is very unlike typical jazz bands. There are also a couple of “duos”, as well as a “quartet”. Local names you might know who will be performing are Sadu, Kadri Voorand, Liisi Koikson, and Mari Jürjens.
Three-day passes are €80 and €115, and one-day passes are €40 and €60, available here. If you need help finding accommodation, look here. Ferry tickets can be purchased here. The full programme is available in Estonian here.
