New Tallinn–Vilnius train route to start in 2025

Train operators in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – Elron, Vivi, and LTG Link – are aligning their schedules to provide passengers with better opportunities to travel between the Baltic countries by train. Starting from January 6, passengers will be able to travel from Tallinn to Vilnius with two transfers.

In a statement, Minister of Regional Development Piret Hartman expressed her happiness that the three countries have found a common solution. “Coordinating the schedules of the three countries’ train operators is especially important for Southern Estonia, as it strengthens local businesses and reinforces the unity of the Baltic States,” Hartman said in a press release from Elron.

“The new schedules, effective from the beginning of the year, will make transfers faster. We are also continuing preparations for a direct Tartu–Riga connection, but as a quicker temporary solution, we have agreed with our colleagues in Latvia and Lithuania to align the schedules,” said Lauri Betlem, CEO of Elron.

Initially, passengers on the Tallinn–Tartu–Riga–Vilnius route will need to purchase tickets from each operator’s website or on the train. However, a unified ticket sales solution is already in development.

From January onwards, passengers will be able to travel by train from Tallinn all the way to Warsaw, though transfers will still be required. Once the Rail Baltic railway line is completed in the future, travel will be much easier and faster, with no need for train changes on the way to the Polish capital.

The schedules for the Vilnius–Riga–Tartu–Tallinn route will be published by December 15 at the latest.
