Medieval Days in Tallinn

Kolyvan, Lindanise, Reval…these are only three of the old names for Tallinn, Estonia’ capital city, which received official city rights in 1248. When knights rode horses and fought with swords, merchants sold imported wares from across the Hanseatic League, and according to films people lived according to an ancient code of chivalry. Once a year this modern city with a medieval old town celebrates its rich history dating back nearly a thousand years: Medieval Days in Tallinn.

For three days, 10–12 July, knights will joust, workshops will teach the townsfolk how things used to be done, revelers can enjoy medieval dancing and music, and old-style food will be available everywhere. Each day has a specific programme.

The first day will begin with a parade at Viru Gate to Town Hall Square, followed immediately by the official opening ceremony and a performance on a slack line. The second day will feature a lecture on medieval combat, followed by the Chamber of Warriors holding their annual Championship of Medieval Fighting.

Join the city dwellers at the medieval market, partake in the generous food and celebrations, and learn of the history and culture of Reval.

The official programme is available here on Facebook in the form of several independent events.
