This Saturday, 27 September, Narva-Jõesuu hosts the tastiest event of the autumn—the traditional Lamprey Festival. From 10:00 to 17:00, the fish market will offer fresh fish as well as a variety of lamprey-based dishes and preserves for purchase.
At 12:00, traditional lamprey soup will be served by the mayor, Maksim Iljin. Around the same time, lectures and workshops will be held where visitors can learn about lamprey fishing, and try their hand at preparing lamprey dishes under the guidance of professional chefs.
At 15:00, a prize draw will take place with prizes and surprises in store. At 15:30, the indie rock band Frankie Animal will take the stage, bringing energy and good music to the autumn air.
Lampreys are a delicacy rarely found on restaurant menus outside the Baltic Sea region. In Narva-Jõesuu, however, they have been fished since ancient times. With their snake-like bodies, lampreys resemble eels at first glance, and their flavour has been appreciated in the courts of Roman emperors and English kings alike.
