Laibach, the legendary band from Slovenia, will have a concert in Tallinn on 27 May in the Salme Cultural Centre in the Kalamaja district. Featuring new and older material alike, the concert will have something for everyone, especially those who can appreciate the nostalgia of the 1980s.
Widely known as an industrial and avant-garde music collective, Laibach was formed in 1980 in the Yugoslav mining town of Trbovlje, which is now a part of Slovenia. The group is known for their industrial sound, provocative visual style, and politically charged conceptual performances. Over the past four decades, Laibach has become one of the most internationally recognised musical acts to emerge from what was once called the Eastern Bloc.
Laibach has also reinterpreted music by artists such as The Beatles, they have adapted literary and philosophical works into music, and they have even performed in North Korea. Historically centred on themes of ideology, authority, nationalism, and mass culture, Laibach’s image has evolved over the years. The group’s founder, Ivan Novak, states, “We like everything that is undesirable,” and Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek is quoted as saying, “Laibach is not the answer, but the question.”
