Hiiu Folk continues to be the only alcohol-free music festival in Estonia

Hiiu Folk, the popular annual four-day folk music festival, will take place this weekend (July 18-21), on the island of Hiiumaa. The event welcomes you to experience the essence of Estonian folk music and culture amidst the picturesque landscapes of Hiiumaa. The festival has proudly remained alcohol-free since it began in 2007, creating a welcoming environment that’s perfect for families and mindful of the environment.

The festival kicks off on Thursday, July 18, at Sõru Boatshed with a heartfelt opening ceremony featuring performances by local musicians and the Kärdla Church Chamber Choir.

Friday offers a chance to explore the island’s natural beauty with guided nature hikes and engaging workshops at Kassari Community Centre. Music enthusiasts can participate in singing workshops with Anu Taul, learn the art of playing the Jewish harp with Cätlin Mägi, and enjoy traditional Estonian folk songs with Valter Parve. In the evening you can listen to folk songs and dance music performed by various Estonian artists, such as Mari Jürjens, Vaiko Eplik, and Cätlin Mägi.

Saturday continues the celebration with more nature hikes and workshops during the day, while the evening at Kassari Kiigeplats features performances by Kannel ensemble Liuli, Naised Köögis, JÄÄÄÄR, and the lively tunes of Väikeste Lõõtspillide Ühing.

The festival concludes on Sunday with serene concerts at various churches across Hiiumaa, including performances by Martti Raide, Paul Daniel, Ott Indermitte, Robirohi, and Mari-Liis Uibo with Ulla Krigul.
