Estonia’s Christmas Markets Are the Best in Northern Europe

Tallinn’s Christmas Market is one of the most charming in Europe. The stalls are filled with treats, handicrafts, and unique gifts.

Christmas markets in Europe bring a festive holiday cheer even to the biggest Grinches among us. Sipping mulled wine, munching on gingerbread, the heavenly aromas of grilled sausages and sauerkraut wafting through the colourful air, the scent of Christmas trees, and the jingling music no doubt create the perfect mood. A light snow only adds to this annual sensation of holiday happiness. Estonia has many wonderful Christmas markets in its various towns and cities, but two of them are recognised internationally as the best in Europe: Tartu, and Tallinn.

Tallinn’s Christmas Market in a Medieval Setting

Tallinn’s Christmas Market will be open the longest, and the earliest, so let’s start with this one. Right on Town Hall Square, centred around a massive Christmas tree picked specially each year, this market is consistently one of the top in the world. Vendors offer every holiday food imaginable, and visitors can frequently enjoy free concerts on the large stage in the corner of the square. Walking into this massive market is like exploring a Christmas-themed labyrinth, with only the tree in the centre to help you find your way around. Tallinn’s Christmas Market will be open from 21 November until 28 December.

Tartu’s Christmas City Is a Snowy Fairy Tale

Tartu’s Christmas City is unique not only in Estonia, but in all of Europe. This small city’s beautiful Town Hall Square features an ice rink each year. Holiday foods, drinks, and goods are available throughout the area, but what really sets this Christmas theme park apart from all others are the several large, glass pavilions. They contain cafés, restaurants, exhibits, animals, and if you time it right, Santa Claus himself! Tartu’s Christmas City will be open from 30 November until 4 January.

Pärnu’s Atmospheric Christmas Village and Market

Pärnu’s Christmas Market will be in the city’s Independence Square from 19–21 December, only three days, so make sure to plan accordingly! This holiday venue isn’t quite as big as the others, but as a result, it is definitely the cosiest. You’re free to chat with the local vendors, wish them well for the Holidays, and listen to them about the family histories behind their homemade goods. The festive sounds and aromas will be worth remembering.

Other Christmas markets and villages very much worth visiting are: Narva’s Christmas Village, open from 20–28 December on Town Hall Square; the Muhu Christmas Fair on 13 December; and the Nõmme, Haapsalu, Kuressaare, and Viljandi Christmas markets.
