Estonian–Finnish Band Cosmic Cowboyz Release Their First Single

Estonian–Finnish rock band Cosmic Cowboyz have released their debut single, “Kino”. A music video for the single has also been released. The band is aiming for live performances as early as the end of the summer.

The band’s vocalist is the well-known Estonian rock voice Freddy Tomingas, and the songs are composed and written by guitarist Martin Jürman, who has previously worked with the Estonian band Smilers, among others. The drummer is Jari Backlund of Finland, who has studied at the Musicians Institute in California, and has extensive experience in the Finnish music scene.

“We first met Martin a couple of years ago when we were looking for a guitarist for our funk band with Margus Alviste. It worked out right away with Martin, and we found a common sound,” Jari Backlund says of his first meeting with Martin Jürman.

At the time, however, Martin had so many other projects that he could not continue in the band.

A year later, Jürman contacted Backlund again and presented his idea for a roots rock band, in which he would compose and write the songs. The soloist would be his long-time musician friend, Freddy Tomingas. The charismatic and experienced singer is known, among other things, from the band The Riff.

“Martin asked me to join the band, and the very next week I recorded the drum tracks for the first single in my home studio. I sent them to Martin and he said that was it. Those same drum tracks ended up being used for the debut single. “Kino”, for which we also made a music video quite quickly,” Backlund recalls the band’s early stages.

Cosmic Cowboyz’s music combines American roots rock and Scandinavian melancholy. This summer, the band plans to release a couple more singles with music videos, and hopes to be able to play gigs as early as July–August.

“The album will be released when all the songs have been recorded,” Backlund adds.

Jari Backlund himself has a long background in the music industry. He played in Aki Haarala’s band before it became the Quintessence band. Then there was a longer break from touring until the drummer found his way back to music while living in Estonia. His brothers—also professional musicians—Jukka Backlund and Tapio Backlund, have always provided strong support.
