A Month of Special Menus Around Tartu

Several high-end restaurants in Tartu and the surrounding region are offering special menus this month to showcase local ingredients, recipes, culinary traditions, and more. Many of these restaurants also offer unique package deals, so it is definitely worth checking out!

Gastronomist Restaurant and Terrace is offering a stuffed filet of Lake Peipus pikeperch, with roasted zucchini and potatoes. Dessert is a Livonian golden reinette soufflé in salted caramel sauce. The menu is €29.

The Dorpat Restaurant along the banks of the Emajõgi River is offering a lightly salt-cured whitefish filet, also from Lake Peipus, with a main course consisting of roasted pork belly served with potato cream and baby vegetables, with a luscious dessert of kama and cream cheese mousse with local blackcurrant jam. This menu is €35.

The Juulamõis Local Heritage Café near Elistvere offers a menu of handmade bread bites with herbal butter accompanied by mead, house root beer, or homemade apple juice—honestly you should try all three of these! The main course is also a Lake Peipus pikeperch filet with local vegetables and tartar sauce, with “Grandma’s” baked apple dessert. The price is €30.

Café Pierre on Tartu’s Town Hall Square is always a pleasant dining experience. Their special menu is Järveotsa quail liver pâté with house plum confit as a starter. The main course is trout in beurre blanc with Lake Peipus onion confit and potato purée with duck jus. This menu is also €30.

And finally the pièce de résistance: Alatskivi Castle, at the northern tip of the famous Onion Route. Their special menu boasts Pähkla trout, veal and tuna filets with crunchy capers, pâté with blackcurrant sauce, grilled venison with potato, truffle and mushroom gravy, followed by a delicious slice of Pavlova. This menu is €85, and you can also stay in one of the castle’s luxurious suites.
