KIKUMU Festival’s Three Days of MusicMaarja Nuut

An old Estonian proverb says that for every year of independence, a new music festival shall be created, because Estonians love music and singing so much. This summer presents the KIKUMU Festival for the first time, which stands for “Kino, Kunst, Muusika”, or “Theatre, Art, Music”. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Lääne-Viru County, just east of Tallinn.

KIKUMU will take place over the course of three days at the Jäneda Õppekeskus, or “educational centre”, a unique structure built in 1975 that bears the hallmarks of its time. Situated in the forests around Tapa in Lääne-Virumaa near a lake, the site offers ample hiking trails and fun for the family, in addition to the numerous concerts each day.

Most of the artists are Estonian, but the headliners are from the UK, and Angola, such as Herbert & Momoko, Gilles Peterson + Rob G, and Nazar. Notable Estonian acts include Röövel Ööbik, Maarja Nuut, Maria Faust, and Vaiko Eplik. Festival passes are available on a daily basis, or for all three days.

The Jäneda Õppekeskus also offers accommodation, and a tent zone is also available. The music will start early in the day on the second and third days, and will end at 4:00 in the morning with live DJ music. With the early sunrise at this time of year, you can enjoy a sunset—or sunrise!—over the numerous lakes in the area while listening to the concerts.

More information and tickets are available here.
