Spend a Delicious Easter on Muhu and Saaremaa

Spring on Saaremaa and Muhu gets off to a delicious start on Saturday, 19 April, when several local villages and homesteads open their doors for the “Sahvrid toovad saladused välja” (“Pantries reveal their secrets”) food event. Throughout this day, visitors will get to know the flavours, traditions, and crafts of the archipelago as told and prepared by locals—right where the flavours and stories originated.

The event will be held between 11:00 and 16:00, and it is worth bringing cash, reusable bags, and a curious mind. The aim of the event is to offer authentic foods and things to experience, and a relaxed community atmosphere.

Flavours, handicrafts and spring breezes

Several “pantries” sell traditional preserves, potatoes, vegetables, syrups, pastries, meat, fish, and local crafts. There are also many cafés, workshops, and children’s programmes, such as crafts.

On Saaremaa, you can visit the Epi farm’s pantry, where you can buy the house’s own preserves and Mustjala mustard. The Karala village hall has a pop-up café and workshops, such as egg dyeing. The Tõllu farm offers Gotland lamb, sea buckthorn berries, and freshly squeezed apple juice.

On the island of Muhu, the Hellamaa village centre offers dried fish, handmade sweets, and birdhouses, among other things. The Jüri-Jaan farm has a garden shop and a small restaurant where you can taste savoury delicacies prepared by local gardeners.

Being local is better

The event will feature a total of nearly 20 operators from different parts of Saaremaa and Muhu. Each venue has its own story and atmosphere: some operate in home yards, others in village houses or old barns. Behind the sales tables you will find the makers themselves, ready to tell you about the backgrounds of their products, and share recipes. This event is a great opportunity to step into the heart of the island chain for a moment, to see, taste, and experience its authentic atmosphere and homemade delicacies.

More information about the event can be found here in Estonian.
