Air traffic between Tartu and Helsinki was reopened in March last year. During this past year, over 37,000 passengers have flown through Tartu Airport, which means an average of over 3100 passengers per month.
For the city of Tartu, this air connection has proven to be important for tourism, trade, and business. It attracts individuals, students, and businesses to the city. “This is more than just a transport connection. It is a vital opportunity for the university, tourism, and business more broadly,” says Urmas Klaas, Mayor of Tartu.
The most popular destinations from Tartu have been to various parts of Finland, Germany, and Belgium, via Helsinki. Other popular destinations are Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States. Most passengers arrived in Tartu from Finland, Germany, Great Britain, and other parts of Northern Europe.
“Estonia is an important market for Finnair, and we are pleased to offer our customers daily, year-round connections from Tartu and Tallinn via Helsinki to our entire global flight network. We also see growing demand from the Nordic countries and Central Europe towards the Baltics, and especially to Estonia,” says Arunas Skuja, Finnair’s Regional Director for Europe.
The flight from Helsinki to Tartu takes 45 minutes, and flights to Helsinki offer convenient connections to almost a hundred destinations around the world. Bus number E1 operates between the centre of Tartu and the airport. More information about the bus connection can be found here.
