According to recent data released by Statistics Estonia, there was a significant rise in the number of foreign tourists staying in accommodation establishments in the country in March 2024. The data indicates a 14 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
“Compared with March 2023, there were 14 per cent more foreign tourists, but their number was still 7 per cent smaller than in March 2019 before the pandemic”, explained Helga Laurmaa, a leading analyst at Statistics Estonia.
In March, the highest numbers of foreign visitors arrived from Finland (44,000) and Latvia (25,100). There were also more tourists arriving from Lithuania, Germany and the United Kingdom. Compared to the same period last year the number of Finnish tourists increased by 11 per cent, Latvian tourists by 33 per cent, Lithuanian tourists by 21 per cent and German tourists by 9 per cent.
The majority of tourists preferred to stay in accommodation establishments in Harjumaa, followed by Pärnumaa and Tartumaa. “The average cost of a night was 42 euros per person, which is one euro cheaper than in March 2023, but 6 euros more than in March 2019 before the crisis”, added Laurmaa.
