Ryanair to close 7 routes from Tallinn

Budget airline Ryanair has announced that it will discontinue 7 routes from Tallinn from the end of March this year. This comes in addition to 2 two routes the airline decided to close in December.

From the end of March Ryanair will stop flying to Paris, Malta, Naples, Nuremberg, Billund, and Dublin from Tallinn. This comes on top of the decision by the airline to close its Liverpool and Edinburgh routes in December. Leaving just one route to the UK and Ireland remaining (to London Stanstead).

In addition, Wizzair has announced that it will close its routes to from Tallinn to Rome, Naples and Venice. Norwegian will also not reopen its flight to Stockholm.

The decisions from the airlines come after an announcement by Tallinn Airport to raise its fee for airlines by 30 per cent. However, the increased fees (the first rise in a decade) are only part of the reason according to Eero Pärgmäe, the CFO of Tallinn Airport.

“The field of aviation has seen rapid recovery since Covid last year, especially for economy airlines. This also meant fierce competition for markets. Throughout this winter, we have seen balance returning, and airlines are reconsidering lines they opened last year,” said Pärgmäe.

He also added that many of the closed routes would have benefitted from the new route discount offer by the airport, meaning they would not have seen a rise in fees until next year.
