Finno-Ugric Folktronica Concert in Tartu’s GenklubiMaarja Nuut

Finno-Ugric Folktronica is a one-night music programme taking place at Genialistide Klubi in Tartu, also known locally as Genklubi, on 17 April until the early morning hours. Organised by the Fenno-Ugria Foundation, the event brings together artists whose work blends traditional Finno-Ugric cultural elements with contemporary electronic and experimental music.

At its core, this concert will explore the concept of “folktronica”, or a fusion of folk traditions and modern electronic sounds. There will be a diverse lineup of musicians. The programme features Kiwa performing under his musical alias Kiwanoid, presenting an audiovisual work titled “Snake Spells”. Kiwa is described as a long-standing figure in Estonia’s experimental art scene, with a career spanning decades, and hundreds of international exhibitions. Alongside him will be Maarja Nuut, a singer, violinist, and composer known for combining classical training with influences ranging from Estonian archival sounds to global musical traditions and electronic experimentation. Her performances are noted for their immersive and hypnotic qualities.

Another key performer will be Olev Muska, a pioneering figure in Estonian electronic folk music whose work dates back to the late 1970s. Muska is credited with creating some of the earliest electronic folk recordings in Estonia, blending synthesiser-based sound with traditional melodies and broader multimedia expression. Completing the lineup is Ahto Külvet, a DJ and record collector who will present a vinyl-based set focusing on Finno-Ugric and Nordic music selections.

The event is designed not only as a concert but also as a cultural experience highlighting the shared heritage of Finno-Ugric peoples through contemporary artistic interpretation. By combining live performance, electronic production, and audiovisual elements, it situates traditional musical motifs within a modern club setting. The venue, known for hosting alternative and experimental cultural events, reinforces this atmosphere.

Tickets, as well as the official event page, are here, but only in Estonian. More information in English is available here.
