Mixed martial arts, the extremely popular sport around the world, also known as MMA, will have its 20th annual event in Tallinn on 10 October. The Tondiraba Ice Rink will be the hosting venue, and visitors will get to watch a number of world-class fighters take on Estonia’s finest. What makes this event special is that for the first time, a former UFC fighter will also step into the cage.
“MMA has been practised in Estonia for 24 years, and during that time no Estonian athlete has faced a former UFC fighter on home soil. It was about time that one of our own went up against a veteran of the world’s premier league who has won in the UFC and become a LUX champion. The return of women to the Raju cage, the first professional kickboxing bout and the greater proportion of professional fights also add extra weight to the anniversary card,” said Evecon RAJU director Ott Tõnissaare.
The fight card includes eight professionals from seven countries versus six professional fighters from Estonia and one each from Romania and Poland. Amateurs include an Estonian and a Latvian woman, and a Norwegian and an Estonian man. Rodrigo Vargas of Mexico is the former UFC fighter. He is 41, his record is 16–7, and his height is 175 cm. He will fight Estonian Kristjan Tõniste, 32, record 5–2, height 183 cm.
