Viru County Fills With Melodies for a Week

The first week of December brings a series of no fewer than ten musical evenings to concert halls, cultural centres, and village association houses across Western and Eastern Viru County. Among the performers are young rising stars, top names in Estonian classical and chamber music, as well as the guest flutist Dominika Ács from Hungary.

The concert programmes range from Advent-themed music to works by well-known composers such as Ravel, Bizet, Sibelius, Bartók, and Brahms. Also featured are works by Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis, as well as film music, which on Wednesday, 3 December, will be performed at Väike-Maarja Village Hall by an intriguing duo—cellist Andreas Lend and accordion artist Allan Jakobi.

The week culminates on Sunday, 7 December, with a performance by the Estonian National Male Choir (RAM) at the Narva Rugodiv Cultural Centre. Founded in 1944, RAM has gained international acclaim and received, among other honors, a Grammy Award for their recording of “Sibelius cantatas” in 2004.

The full programme for the Virumaa Music Festival week, including performers and venues, can be explored on the event’s website and Facebook page. Almost all concerts are free to attend.
