Titled “The Songs of Edith Piaf”, this concert in the Tubin Room in Tartu on 16 November will celebrate the 110th anniversary of the birth of France’s most celebrated singer. The repertoire will include songs from the various decades of Edith Piaf’s life. Audience members familiar with her music will enjoy a journey straight to the centre of Paris over a century ago.
The timeless legacy of the “Sparrow of Paris” features her unmistakable style of love, longing, and even joy, enchanting listeners with pure sincerity, as well as depth learned from a lifetime of difficult experiences. For example at the age of three, she lost her sight to meningitis, only regaining it four years later. This might allow listeners a new appreciation of her song, “La Vie en Rose”.
Her song “Hymne à l’amour” is dedicated to the memory of her lover, who famously died in a plane crash on his way to meet Piaf while they were having an affair. She was later in life involved in a serious car crash that led to a morphine addiction, which only made her alcohol problem more serious. Then her song, “Non, je ne regrette rien”.
Performing “The Songs of Edith Piaf” will be Erkki Otsman on vocals, Allan Jakobi on the accordion, Andranik Kechek on the piano, and Tanel Liiberg on the double bass.
