This month, Southern Estonia is transforming into a veritable gastronomic playground as the annual “From Forest to Plate” event—”Metsast Taldrikule” in Estonian—returns for the sixth year running. From now until 16 November, Jõgeva, Valga, Põlva, Võru, Tartu, and Viljandi Counties are inviting foodies to enjoy fresh meals harvested locally.
There are nearly 60 participating restaurants offering specially priced, two-course meals for around €27–€32. Each meal contains at least one local ingredient from the Estonian forests. Autumn in Southern Estonia is a great time to celebrate local food culture, and small, local food businesses. From mushrooms and truffles to berries and venison, these menus offer something wonderful for everyone. Marilin Kroon, Tartu’s Development Manager for the Food and Service Industry, says, “Wild and exciting taste experiences connect nature, local flavours, and chefs’ creativity.” To get the full experience, enjoy a relaxing afternoon drive through forests and villages on your way to one of these restaurants.
Reservations are strongly recommended as many restaurants only offer limited spots under this special programme. The full list of participating venues and menus is available here, as well as the menu offers and prices.
