“The Magic Flute” is the final opera of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Since its world premiere in 1791, it has universally been considered a masterpiece of music. It will be performed twice this year in the Estonia National Opera on 5 and 7 June.
Traditionally very difficult to categorise, “The Magic Flute” can be considered many things: a performance of heavenly music, a spectacle for the senses, a study of the forces of light and darkness. Even visually this opera is a masterpiece.
Wicked queens and noble princes will populate the stage, accompanied by fairytale creatures and allegories that will entrance audiences throughout the entire two-hour and 50-minute performance. There will also be one intermission.
The orchestra will be conducted by Arvo Volmer, with Elena Brazhnyk as Pamina, Heldur Harry Põlda as Tamina, Suvi Väyrynen as Queen of the Night, and René Soom as Papageno. The full cast is listed here, and tickets are available here.
Mozart is a name known to everyone in the world. Born in Austria in 1756, he produced over 800 works of nearly every genre of Western music at the time. This is especially impressive given that he lived only 35 years. He began composing at the age of 5, and was already recognised as a prodigy of composition and music.
