Two Estonian Greats in One Concert

One was a central performer in Estonia’s Singing Revolution, the other…was also a central performer in Estonia’s Singing Revolution! Tõnis Mägi and Ivo Linna are both icons of Estonian music history. On 16 and 27 April, they will unite for two concerts in Tartu and Tallinn, called “Ivo Linna ja Tõnis Mägi—Aeg” (Time).

Both singers are household names in Estonia. Both have influenced the days of childhood for multiple generations. Penning and performing hundreds of songs, a visitor to Estonia would be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know the words to “Eestlane olen, ja eestlaseks jään” (I’m Estonian, and I’ll stay Estonian), and “Koit” (Dawn).

Linna and Mägi are also famous for singing together in Alo Mattisen’s mega-hit “Ei ole üksi ükski maa” (No Country Is Alone), a musical project inspired by “We Are the World” and performed by several other well-known singers from that time. This song is widely lauded as Estonia’s second national anthem.

These two concerts are a wonderful opportunity to look through the window of what it means to be Estonian. And if by chance you’re not really that interested, it’s still going to be a great concert, one to remember!

Tickets to the first concert, in Tartu’s Vanemuine Concert Hall on 16 April, are available here, and tickets to the second concert, in Tallinn’s Alexela Concert Hall on 27 April, are available here.
