In November 2024, the turnover of retail trade enterprises in Estonia was 884 million euros, which was a 1 per cent decrease compared to November 2023, according to Statistics Estonia. The primary contributor to the decline was falling sales in grocery stores, whose turnover dropped by 4 per cent year-on-year.
Johanna Linda Pihlak, an analyst at Statistics Estonia, explained that grocery stores saw the largest negative impact. However, the turnover of stores selling manufactured goods showed a positive trend, increasing by 2 per cent over the same period.
Among manufactured goods retailers, specialised stores experienced significant growth, with a 15 per cent rise in turnover. These stores primarily sell computers, books, sports equipment, and toys. Meanwhile, stores selling goods via mail order or online saw a 10 per cent increase in turnover. On the other hand, some sectors experienced a decline, with stores selling household goods, hardware, and building materials seeing a 6 per cent drop, while turnover in second-hand goods stores and non-store retail fell by 3 per cent.
In comparison to October 2024, the turnover of retail enterprises decreased by 1 per cent, though seasonally adjusted data showed turnover remained stable. Over the first eleven months of 2024, retail trade turnover dropped by 3 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
