Estonian tourism saw modest growth in September

In September 2024, Estonia’s accommodation establishments served 278,000 tourists—a modest 1 per cent increase from the same period last year, according to Statistics Estonia. Foreign tourists saw an 11 per cent rise in numbers, totalling 153,000, while domestic tourists decreased by 8 per cent, with 125,000 staying in accommodation facilities. Despite this growth, the overall tourist numbers remain 6 per cent lower than pre-pandemic levels in September 2019.

Most foreign tourists came from neighbouring countries, with 46,000 from Finland (30 per cent of all foreign tourists), followed by 17,000 from Latvia, 13,000 from Germany, and 7,000 from Lithuania. Germany saw the largest increase in visitor numbers (up 51 per cent), while Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania showed declines. The majority of foreign tourists (77 per cent) were in Estonia for leisure, and 73 per cent opted to stay in Harjumaa county, which includes Tallinn.

Accommodation occupancy rates in Estonia reached 47 per cent across 1,059 establishments offering 23,000 rooms and 53,000 beds. The average cost per night was 50 euros, marking a 4 per cent increase from 2023 and 25 per cent from 2019.
