Rakvere Funkfest: A must-see event in July

Rakvere Funkfest 2024 will take place on Saturday, July 20, at the picturesque Rakvere Vallimäe. The festival, which first debuted in 2021, is making a grand return after a year-long hiatus with ambitious plans to establish Rakvere as the European capital of funk music. Under the leadership of new chief producer Mihkel Mäekalle, the festival aims to offer an electrifying one-day programme packed with top-notch performances and unique experiences.

The festival has grown significantly since its inception, attracting nearly 1,500 attendees in its second year, up from just under 1,000 in the first year. This year’s edition promises to be even more exciting, with a line-up that includes notable acts such as Liis Lemsalu Goes Funk, Arg Part, Haldi & ans Flamingo, The Teps, and a special performance of Michael Jackson hits by Alika, Marta Lotta, and Norman Salumäe. Swiss artist Anatole Muster will also grace the stage, although KNOWER who was also meant to perform had to withdraw due to health issues.

Mihkel Mäekalle, a seasoned musician and festival organiser, draws parallels between the festival’s growth strategy and Apple’s iterative approach to product development. He emphasizes the festival’s “sutsakafestival” format—a one-day event that delivers a concentrated burst of energy and excitement without the fatigue associated with longer festivals.

For attendees’ convenience, special buses will run from Tallinn and Tartu to the festival, providing round-trip transportation for 12 euros. Additionally, a limited number of camping tickets are available for 7 euros, with potential expansion if demand exceeds supply.
