1000 Cranes Festival: A Fusion of Cultures

Tomorrow, March 9, will see the beginning of the 5-day long 1000 Cranes Festival. The festival will see a wide variety of performance artists from Japan, Singapore, and Estonia grace the stage at Viimsi Artium, as will as Theatrum and Kino Artis in Tallinn.

The festival draws its name from the ancient Japanese tradition where paper cranes were given to newborns and newlyweds as a symbol of longevity and happiness. Reflecting on this tradition, the event aims to explore the profound desires of the human heart through the medium of performance art.

Renowned performers from Singapore and Japan will grace the stages, bringing their unique perspectives and talents. Among the highlights of the festival is the debut of the Estonian group *birdname’s new ballet, “Kurat ja Jumal” (translated as “Devil and God”), which promises a captivating fusion of narrative and movement.

Viimsi Artium, Theatrum, and Kino Artis will play host to the diverse lineup of the 1000 Cranes Festival between April 9 and 13.
