On April 5, a new international exhibition entitled “Päästik” (Trigger in English) will open at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) in Tallinn. Artists from as far afield as the USA, Mexico, and France will participate in the exhibition.

The exhibition, which is the first joint project of museum curators Evelyn Raudsepp and Maria Helen Känd was born as a reaction to the never-ending news cycle that has led almost all of us to emotional exhaustion.

The curators’ desire was to find ways of expression that, like music, dance or performance art, would offer sensory and physical stimulation to counteract this. To create such an environment, the exhibition will include video works by the French collective (LA)HORDE and the artist Jacolby Satterwhite from the USA, which highlight the energy of choreographic self-expression and suggestive sound backgrounds.

At the exhibition, Estonian artist Mihkel Maripuu will combine new digital-synthetic paintings with an older series made using a similar method, and Swedish artist Hanna Antonsson will present fragile kinetic sculptures.

Breaking out of the tradition of consumer art, objects from Mexican designer and artist Bárbara Sánchez-Kane and Estonian artist Darja Popolitova will show the human body’s ability to transform with the help of clothing and jewelry.

The exhibition will open tomorrow (April 5), with a special opening event that will include a curators tour with the artists, which will take place in English.

Between April 5 and the end of the closing of the exhibition on June 2 there will be further tours of the exhibitions, dance performances, and more. You can find out more about the exhibition on the official EKKM website.
