Hike long-lost frozen paths in Tartumaa

Tartu’s year as the European Capital of Culture is not limited to the city, with events taking place all over southern Estonia. One such event is the almost three-week-long Winter Roads in Ahunapalu, where you will be able to go on hikes, enjoy movie nights, listen to historians, drift away in concerts, and visit an exhibition.

The event gets its name from the unique winter roads that crisscross Emajõe-Suursoo (great marsh/bog). In ancient times these frozen roads connected isolated communities. Today, these long-forgotten paths are still used by wild animals.

The almost three-week-long Winter Roads event, which is now entering its second week, gives you the chance to go on guided snowshoe hikes along these ancient roads and learn about the past. With each week heading to a different part of the bog.

From January 28 to February 3, there will also be an exhibition about the winter roads in Ahunapalu prayer house. This is also where it will be possible to listen to historians, watch movies, as well as enjoy live music.

You can find out a little bit more about what is happening on specific days and buy tickets on Piletilevi. The event also has a Facebook page where you can find out more information.
