Tallinn’s Patarei Sea Fortress set to be renovated by 2025

Developer US Real Estate has announced plans to begin renovations of the Patarei Sea Fortress this year. The project, which will see the former prison complex transformed into offices, cafes, a brewery, an art gallery and a museum, is expected to be completed by 2025.

On Wednesday, developer US Real Estate announced plans to renovate the historic Patarei Sea Fortress in Tallinn. The building, which was constructed in the 19th century, served as a prison until as recently as 2005. Since then, the site has struggled to have a permanent purpose and use. For a period, tours of the former prison were available, parties and concerts were held in the grounds, and more recently, the International Museum for the Victims of Communism opened in a part of the building.

Plans for the renovations are already in advanced stages, as the developer has already announced its first construction tender, and they already have 75 people working on the site.

“Our team is working hard to ensure that Patarei Sea Fortress is completed earlier than originally planned. We have set the goal of having this unique historical complex and new buildings located at Vesilennuki 2 ready in three years, in the summer of 2025,” explained Aavo Kokk, CEO of US Real Estate.

When the renovations are complete, the complex will have 32,000 m2 of rental space. At present, it is planned to include office space, restaurants, cafes, a brewery, a grocery store, an event centre, an art gallery, and a museum. In addition, there will also be a 310m long promenade, where outdoor café and leisure activities are expected.
