Tallinn to host WTA tennis tournament this autumn

The Women’s Tennis Association, the WTA, has confirmed that Tallinn will host a WTA 250 tournament during the last week of September.

Tallinn will play host to a WTA 250 tournament in the week of 26 September 2022. WTA 250 tournaments are the third level of WTA tournaments, after WTA 1000, and WTA 500 events. These are the lowest level of WTA tournaments on the WTA tour, before the lower WTA challenger series and ITF tours.

It is the fact that it the tournament is lowest level of WTA Tour that caused some government disapproval to the proposal for the tournament earlier in the year. With Prime Minister Kaja Kallas initially being opposed to the event in February because of a lack of economic benefits.

However, Estonia’s highest ranked player Anett Kontaveit, came out in support of the proposed tournament and announced she would play in it.  Kontaveit is the current reigning champion of two WTA 250 tournaments and is the World Number 5.

Last year, an ITF tournament took place in Viimsi, in which Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi (World Number 46) took part.
