Tallinn Music Week (TMW) has announced a partnership with the international gender equality initiative, Keychange, for a groundbreaking leadership programme set to launch this November. Supported by a 1 million euros grant from the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, the new initiative aims to break down barriers for women and gender minorities in the music industry.
The leadership programme, spearheaded by Germany’s RBX GmbH, the organisers of the Reeperbahn Festival, focuses on empowering artists and professionals who identify as women or gender minorities, offering them the tools to overcome the challenges they face due to their gender. The programme will feature training, workshops, and networking opportunities at leading European and Canadian music festivals and conferences. Additionally, participants will benefit from personalised mentoring and collaboration opportunities through Keychange’s alumni network.
TMW is joined by other prominent music industry organisations and festivals from across Europe, including Musikcentrum Öst (Sweden), SACEM (France), Oslo World (Norway), Different Sounds Festival, Artist in Bloom, and Music Export Poland.
The initiative has also gained the backing of BMG Rights Management, one of the world’s largest music companies. BMG, which represents iconic artists like the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, and Kylie Minogue, will assist underrepresented artists in maximising the profitability of their work in the digital age.
Tallinn Music Week has been an advocate for gender equality in the music industry, achieving gender balance among performers at its 2018 conference, a first for an international event in Estonia.
Notable Estonian artists who have previously participated in Keychange’s talent programme include Maarja Nuut, Mari Kalkun, and Manna. The programme has also supported local industry professionals like Britt Randma and Natalie Mets.
